Check it out; a post not related to the wedding! I bet you didn't think I had it in me.
I can think of no better subject matter to interrupt the wedding posts than the subject of Oscar being recognized for a lifetime of service to firefighting.
Last night, Hugh, Shanti, the Cub, and I joined Oscar and Emily at the firehouse in Petticoat Junction, where Oscar received both the Lifetime Achievement recognition and all of the service pins necessary to make him a Commander. Hugh, Emily, and the Cub got the pinning honors, and I was happy to document the occasion in photos, while one of the firemen in attendance held Hugh's phone so that Hugh's brother, sister, nephews, and Queen B could all participate via FaceTime.
It was a full family affair.
We are incredibly proud of Oscar's 61 years of service, as a rookie firefighter in New York, all the way up the chain of command in Colorado. When he "retired" from firefighting, Oscar continued to work for the department in a variety of positions, both paid and volunteer. At the age of 85, he continues in a position on the Firemen Association Board, and, responds to crisis calls to facilitate efforts in the command center.
Hugh joined the fire department in 2020, following his "retirement" from law enforcement; Oscar teases that it was about time he came over from "the dark side". Hugh's service makes him the third generation to enter the profession, as Oscar's grandfather was a fire commander in Europe (the fire bug skipped a generation with Oscar's father, and another one with the Man-Cub. I mean, as far as we know).
It was a great evening for the family and a very well deserved honor for Oscar. And, like I said earlier; a good reason to interrupt the wedding posts.
We will now return to our previously scheduled program.
