This is Resiliency

This week's crappy weather didn't keep the hummingbirds down; this fat little guy braved the slushy rain and hung out on the feeder long after less resilient birds would have hightailed it to their nests.

When the weather cleared, he celebrated by aggressively chasing other hummers away from the feeders, because, in addition to being resilient, hummingbirds are mean little buggers. Hey, you would be too, if you had to eat three times your body weight every hour just to stay alive.

I totally made that up. In actuality, hummingbirds eat half of their body weight in sugar daily. On average, they eat a meal about every ten minutes, which makes for 48 meals a day. In addition, a small hummingbird can also consume several hundred fruit flies each day; you know, for a snack in between those meals. File this information under The More You Know.

You're welcome.

  1. They need the fruit flies for the fiber. We all need fiber!
